From Varsity Blue to the Tricolour, here are all OUA football uniforms ranked.

Even though the game of football is considered to be a violent and gritty game, there are elements of it that are pretty and aesthetically pleasing. Football is a game of contradictions in many ways, as that same overwhelming tide of brutality can be offset by the game's more visually striking aspects, such as deep throws, tight spirals, effortless grabs, and perhaps, most of all, the uniforms.

There have been many cases of fans falling in love with a team due to the colours, patterns, and accents that adorn their uniforms. It is often a necessary event for people coming into their own as sports fans to find a team that looks stylish and appeals to them, and then root for them. In the year 2025, most sports uniforms tend to fit those categories as manufacturers have worked tirelessly to keep their looks relevant and striking.

Fortunately for U SPORTS football fans, there are plenty of great looks to admire across all conferences. From number 11 to number one, here are our opinions on the best home threads in the OUA.

11. Toronto Varsity Blues.

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues' home uniforms are precisely that, blue. The school refers to that shade as U of T Blue, and it has been a staple of the university's brand for years. Most of Toronto's pro sports teams, excluding the Raptors and Toronto FC, wear a shade of blue as their primary colour. The home uniforms consist of a blue jersey with white numbers and a helmet with the traditional Toronto 'T' and maple leaf, followed by predominantly blue pants accented by a white stripe that runs vertically down the side of a player's leg.

The Varsity Blues come at number 11 on our list because of their home uniform's simplicity in comparison to other OUA teams. That is not a bad thing by any means, but there is no significant diversification of colours in their home uniforms. In staying true to the university's brand and tradition, it does its job and is quite iconic when viewed. However, something about the team and its location in Toronto leaves something to be desired with their home threads.

10. Waterloo Warriors.

The Waterloo Warriors' home uniforms feature a predominantly black combination of helmet, jersey, and pants. Gold is featured on the numbers, shoulders, and helmet, showcasing the Warrior logo, and it is a bright shade that nearly borders on fluorescent in the right light.

The combination of black and gold is a widely used one in sports. Waterloo's use of the two is effective in its means, but there is a significantly smaller amount of gold on the home uniforms, as the rest is swallowed up by darkness. There is an alternate uniform that consists of the usual black helmet and jersey, but the pants are gold, and so is the facemask. Perhaps making the gold facemask a permanent part of the home uniforms would help the Warriors jump up a spot or two on this list, as it feels like there is a missing element.

9. Carleton Ravens

Carleton's home uniforms are sleek, with one defining characteristic that makes them easy on the eyes - the helmet. The white helmet with the raven on its side is a lovely cherry on top that truly emphasizes all of the colours that make up the Ravens' home uniform.

The jersey and pants are mainly black but come speckled with accents of red and white. The shoulder area is distinct with a few colourful stripes underneath another Ravens logo, and the numbers are white with red bordering. The pants feature multiple stripes of the school's colours and match the pattern on the shoulder area well. All in all, it is a solid uniform, but it does not evoke the same aura and elegance as some of the OUA's other programs, notably, their inner-city rivals.

#8: York Lions.

The Lions know how to make a uniform pop. York's home uniforms are a beautiful combination of a rich shade of red and white, with the former decorating the pants and most of the jersey, and the latter being embellished on the helmet. The jersey features the word 'York' in white letters right above the numbers of the same colour and is aided by the matching white helmet with the red Lions logo on one side of it. One of the helmet's coolest details is the bright red facemask that complements the jersey and pants.

Even though they have not seen great success on the field as of late, York steps out in style at their home games. Their home uniforms are explosive in their makeup, and they summon a fast-paced, dogged, and hungry air. It will be a sight to remember when quarterback Keagan Hall suits up in the resplendent red and white come Aug. 23.

7. Ottawa Gee-Gees

Ahh, the garnet and grey. A classic uniform combination that has stood the test of time and even gave the University of Ottawa its team name, the Gee-Gees, through the first letters of each colour. The Gees' home uniform is very well put together, even though there is not an overwhelming amount of variety in terms of its look. The helmet, jersey, and pants are all covered in garnet, or maroon if you will, with the white numbers on the jersey being outlined in the school's traditional grey. The Gee's horse logo on the helmet is a bright white, and all of it comes together to present one of the OUA's most recognizable gameday attires.

The Gees' home uniform is slick and is sometimes altered to accompany a grey helmet with a garnet horse logo. This change truly exemplifies the school's love for its colours, as the helmet balances out the proportion of garnet by adding more grey to the overall look. Regardless of the helmet colour, it is hard to go wrong with these threads in any capacity as the Gee-Gees are one of the OUA's most visually versatile teams.

6. McMaster Marauders

This one was a coin flip as it came down to some very minute details to rank the Marauders' home uniforms ahead of the Gee-Gees. They both share a similar shade of maroon and sport white accents on their jerseys' shoulder areas, however, Mac has a slight white stripe gliding down the players' leg. All in all, both uniforms are sharp and very much recognizable to U SPORTS fans, but for our rankings, this decision came down to one sliver of an attribute. The helmet.

McMasters' helmets feature a rich maroon colour and a white facemask, fairly similar to the Gees' helmet setup, right? Right it is, but McMaster's helmets feature 'reward decals' or 'helmet stickers', similar to the ones famously used by the NCAA's Ohio State Buckeyes. These are white stickers with the Marauder eagle on the middle and they are given to players based on individual or team achievements that were reached. It is this cool nod to the players, and the way with which they match the rest of the uniform, that lands the Marauders at number six on this list.

5. Laurier Golden Hawks.

Now we are getting into the nitty-gritty of this list, the exclusive area where the sharpest home uniforms in the OUA reside. At number five is the Laurier Golden Hawks and their gorgeous royal purple home getups. The school's official colours are purple and gold, and they are very well-represented when the Golden Hawks take the field at University Stadium in Waterloo. The pants and jerseys are predominantly purple with white numbers and gold bordering around them. Two large white stripes in between two golden ones grace the shoulders, and the helmet is embellished with a glossy purple finish and the school's Golden Hawk logo.

It is striking, it is exquisite, and it catches the eye quickly. Purple is a well-represented colour in the landscape of U SPORTS football uniforms, and Laurier has situated itself at a premier point in that environment. There is neither too little nor too much about them; they represent their school's colours well and are consistently easy on the eyes.

4. Windsor Lancers

The Lancers look very well put together on a home game day, and they are a great tribute to the phrase 'less is more.' The school's colours are blue and gold, and in staying true to that, those are the only two that you will find on their home outfits. The pants are a radiant gold colour and they contradict the blue jerseys well. There is no bordering along the gold numbers and blue helmets feature a gold decal of the school's 'W' logo that is aimed downwards towards the facemask.

Using only the school's colours, the Lancers have found a way to make themselves into a stylish component of the OUA's uniform structure. The look is very reminiscent of the University of Michigan's colourway at home, but in contrast to them, gold is used instead of the bright hue of maize which is employed by the Wolverines. Their healthy use of simplicity and directness helps land the Lancers the fourth-overall spot on this list.

3. Guelph Gryphons

You wanna talk about versatility with uniforms, the University of Guelph best represents that word in the OUA with their football garb. The school's offical colours are red, black, and gold, and they make use of each of those with the many different home combinations available to the Gryphons. In choosing just one to analyze, we will choose their uniform combination of the red helmet, red jersey, and gold pants.

The pants are a light gold colour that stick out and they are compounded by the red jersey with gold numbers, and the bright red helmet with the Gryphon logo on the side. A nice touch on the helmets is the gold facemask which matches the pants in a bold yet fashionable way. Overall, their home dress is sleek, well-representative of the school's colours, and it projects an air of utmost confidence in the school' ability to look good and play good all at once.

2. Western Mustangs

The Mustangs can rest assured knowing that they are a consistent Yates Cup contender year after year, but they can also take pleausure in the fact that they look awesome while doing it. Purple, white, and silver is not an extremely common trifecta of colours in sports, but the Mustangs know how to use all in the right way to create a classic look.

The Mustangs' bright purple jersey and pant combination is met with white numbering and sports stripes of the same colour down the side of the leg and on the shoulders. The helmet has a beautiful silver tone and a dark purple facemask that adds more richness to this already great home uniform. Everything goes together in a wonderful way; nothing seems off, and there is not a single aspect of it that can be removed for improvement. It is very hard to top this combination of colours, but there is one school out there that has, and arguably always will, best the Mustangs in these rankings. Who else could it be but...

1. Queen's Gaels

Did you see it coming? The Queen's Tricolour is, and has always been, an iconic uniform combination that has stood the test of time. Any fan of U SPORTS football can instantly recognize the iconic qualities that make up the Gaels' home outfits. The Tricolour is named so because of Queen's official triplet of school colours, which are red, blue, and gold. These colours have represented the school's athletic endeavours for a long time, as they were officially debuted in 1884. They have become synonymous with the identity of the Gaels' football program and are hallmarks of the rich history of football in Canada.

The Gaels' uniform is made up of mainly gold helmets, jerseys, and pants, but it is the smaller intrinsic details of it that make it the OUA's top home football uniform. The stripes that run down the players' legs and that arch on their shoulders are two dark navy stripes with a red one situated between them. The numbers are the same shade of navy with red bordering, showcasing an excellent use of the school's colours on the jersey. The helmet is the crowning piece, featuring two red stripes with a blue one in between, which runs from the base to the front. On both sides are the player's jersey number; a very unique touch as it is the only helmet in all of U SPORTS to sport that feature.

These elements come together to produce a gravitating, magnetic, fine-looking home football uniform that is well-deserving of the number-one spot on this list. Its sharpness is unequalled and will be the focal point of visits from high schoolers taking recruiting pictures for years to come.
