The AUS season is only two weeks young and already the cream is beginning to rise to the top. The St. FX X-Men dismantled the Acadia Axemen on the road with a decisive 35-0 win on Saturday afternoon.
X quarterback Silas Fagnan unsurprisingly had a big day. The fifth-year went 25-of-38 for 320 yards and a touchdown. He added a second score on the ground, along with 22 yards on two attempts.
More than a third of Fagnan's passing yards were fed to receiver Zachary Houde. Houde managed to snag nine passes for 139 yards and a touchdown.
In the return of Malcolm Bussey, it didn’t start well. His fourth carry produced a fumble on an early second and goal.
The ball was recovered by Acadia, but that was about as much life as the Axemen would get. Fagnan managed to weave through the Acadia defence for a 12-yard touchdown on the very next drive and the score was never in jeopardy after that.
Other than the early fumble, Bussey played well. The veteran running back carried the ball 14 times for 65 yards and a rushing touchdown. Fellow fifth-year Caleb Fogarty also ran well, carrying the ball eight times for 42 yards and a touchdown.
It’s games like this that make you dream of some sort of bright future where we might get midseason U SPORTS cross-conference games. Imagine in Week 3 or Week 4 if we got to see St. FX play Saskatchewan, or Guelph, or any other non-conference team?
Real world economics aside, I personally think it’s a shame we don’t get to live in that future. It would do wonders for enhancing the compete level across all conferences.
St. FX will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 6 at 2:00 p.m. AST as they host the Mount Allison Mounties.
