The Queen’s Gaels handled the Varsity Blues on Saturday afternoon, cruising to a decisive victory, 44-6. It was a collective team effort – the offence was consistent, defence was suffocating, and the special teams delivered when needed.
It didn’t take long for things to get going. Both teams traded field goals early, before wide receiver Nathan Falconi scored his first of three touchdowns on the day, giving the Gaels a 10-3 lead after one.
After that, Toronto would tack on one more field goal to start the second, but that was all the offence they could produce. The Queen’s defence smothered Toronto quarterback, Scott Barnett, giving him zero space and forcing five interceptions on the day.
Falconi added another touchdown to give the Gaels an 11-point advantage at the half, 17-6.
The second half was more of the same. Running back Jared Chisari would add his first of two touchdowns, a stellar performance from the fifth year who also rushed for 183 yards.
Quarterback Alex Vreeken would connect with Falconi once again, his third touchdown, making the score 31-6 at the end of the 3rd.
A pair of field goals and another touchdown in the fourth would seal the game and give the Queen’s Gaels the victory, 44-6.
The win was an important bounce back for the tricolour after their tough loss to Laurier last week. The Gael’s move to 2-2 on the season and will travel to Waterloo next weekend to take on the Warriors.
Toronto drops to 1-3, and will host the Windsor Lancers next weekend at Varsity Stadium.
