Laurier hands Western biggest loss in program history

One of the biggest questions heading into the 2025 OUA football season centered around the Western Mustangs. Could the perennial program bounce back and exact revenge on the defending Yates Cup champions, the Laurier Golden Hawks?

That question has been answered, and the result made some of us feel foolish for even asking.

Laurier delivered one of the most dominant performances of the OUA season, dismantling Western 60-13 on Saturday afternoon. The defeat marked Western’s first regular-season home loss since 2014—and one of the most lopsided defeats of the Greg Marshall era.

The Golden Hawks dictated the pace from the opening kickoff. Their defensive line was suffocating, giving Western quarterback Evan Hillock little room to operate—he finished an uncharacteristic 8-for-22 on the day.

By halftime, a single field goal was all the Mustangs could muster, as Laurier took a 17-3 lead.

Then came the third-quarter avalanche. Laurier exploded for four touchdowns and a field goal, stretching the lead to 50-3 at the end of frame, silencing the Mustangs’ faithful.

Western finally broke through Laurier’s defence in the fourth quarter with a Jérôme Rancourt touchdown, his 11th of the season.

But it was too little, too late. Laurier’s multifaceted attack and swarming defence made a statement that will echo across U SPORTS.

The Golden Hawks move to the top of the OUA, securing home-field advantage for the playoffs with an emphatic 60-13 victory, one that Western won’t soon forget.

Key Stats:
